Alice McLerran

  • ... even if the content of programming were ideal, the medium itself is inherently dangerous to childhood. It is not the business of children to be sitting rapt, passively absorbing a virtual reality designed by others, drawn into images that move at a pace that cannot be altered and that allows no chance for reflection. A democratic society demands a certain capacity for critical thinking on the part of its citizens. We should be wary of a medium that by its very nature conditions children to be passive and unquestioning receivers of whatever is offered them.
