Pacifism

  • All that a pacifist can undertake — but it is a very great deal — is to refuse to kill, injure or otherwise cause suffering to another human creature, and untiringly to order his life by the rule of love though others may be captured by hate.

  • ... once your eyes get opened to pacifism, you can't shut them again. Once you see it, you can't unsee it. You may bitterly regret the fact that you happen to be one of the tiny minority of the human race who have caught this angle of vision, but you can't help it.

  • If it means loathing war sufficiently to bear the unpleasant brunt of being branded a coward, I suppose I am a pacifist.

  • I am an uncompromising pacifist. ... I have no sense of nationalism, only a cosmic consciousness of belonging to the human family.

    • Rosika Schwimmer,
    • citizenship hearing (1926), in Lillian Schlissel, ed., Conscience in America ()
  • Pacifism simply is not a matter of calm looking on; it is work, hard work.

    • Käthe Kollwitz,
    • letter (1944), in Hans Kollwitz, ed., The Diaries and Letters of Käthe Kollwitz ()
